"Hold" (Dreamtime, 1985)
Title: Hold
Rating: PG
Summary: This time, something feels different about the way they're holding one another.
They've grown so accustomed to winding up in each other's arms for other reasons--nightmares and close calls, mostly, sometimes just pure heartfelt friendship--that it takes them both a couple seconds to realize this time is different.
Nick gets it first, but he can't move, can't speak. Can't risk ruining everything. Instead he lets his eyes say all the things he can't, hoping Cody's listening.
Cody's listening.
He's been listening for years, straining to hear encouragement enough to jump in and swim those last few yards between them, to reach for Nick the way he's always dreamed of. And now it's right there in front of him, all round him, in the uneasy tension in Nick's arms, the nervous flick of the tongue over his lips. So close.
Cody pulls him closer, terrified, and lays a hand along Nick's face, needing confirmation of what he thinks he's seeing.
Nick turns and kisses Cody's palm, soft, lingering. Yes, his eyes say. This. You. Always.
Before his brain can tell him no Cody makes his move, so used to following Nick's directions. He's never been led wrong yet.
