"The Bare Essentials" (Stepping Stones, 2007)

Title: The Bare Essentials
Rating: PG
Summary: What Cody hears at night just before sleep.

Cody Allen had lived on boats for nearly sixty years -- his whole life, almost, and the parts of his life he'd lived on land he didn't care to remember. He knew all the noises a boat should make, all the noises you could expect in a marina: the squeak of fiberglass against water-swollen wood, the lap of waves at the hull, the ding of a buoy riding hard waves. The sound of deck shoes coming along a pier, and high heels, and the sensible sneakers Murray used to wear, too. But there was one sound alone that made a boat feel like home.

Cody relaxed more deeply into the mattress and, eyes closed, listened to Nick’s deep, uncomplicated snores. They were as much a part of boat living as any of the other sounds.

Nick snorted and rolled closer into Cody’s side, burrowing into him, warm and solid. Cody waited for a few moments, savoring, then the snoring resumed.

Cody grinned into the darkness and closed his eyes. After all these years, he was only now realizing that of all the bare essentials, the boat part was optional.
