"Home for Wikkmas" (Riptide in Space)
Title: Home for Wikkmas
Rating: PG
Summary: The three pirates of the spaceship Riptide find something to celebrate. References events in Neuros Are For Never.
The three crewmembers of the Riptide stood on her bridge, silently staring out into the vast, dark depths of space. It had been six long Geldarian cycles since the debacle with the neuros, and they were all still recovering. They were in debt up to their eyeballs, and they'd finally had to put the Ebbtide up as collateral against the fuel they needed to keep running.
Now to top it all off, Murray was being cheerful.
"Well look on the bright side, guys, we still have the Riptide, we still have the Mimi--"
Cody groaned, then whispered to Nick, "Here it comes..."
"--and we still have--"
"--each other." Nick and Cody finished in unison.
"Exactly!" Murray squawked. "And really, that's all you need!" He carried an armful of brightly colored baubles and fuzzy shiny string, and deposited it all in a heap on the captain's console. Roboz floated over with another load of baubles, and Murray carefully arranged them all in a pile.
"Murray!" Cody protested. "Murray! I need that space to...uh...captain from." Nick snorted. "Besides," Cody continued, "what is all this stuff anyway?"
"Yeah, and how much could we get if we sold it?" Nick asked flatly.
Cody put a restraining hand on his arm, and shook his head. He was dressed in his on-board jumpsuit, as they hadn't been able to buy him a new set of combat gear yet. They were lucky the Riptide hadn't run into any trouble yet, because as Nick liked to point out, Cody's jumpsuit looked a lot like a set of footie pajamas. And offered every bit as much protection.
"Well, I know we all come from very different places," Murray responded, "but I just couldn't resist bringing out a little of the spirit of Wikkmas."
"Spirit of what?" the guys asked in unison.
Murray stopped, pushing his glasses back up his nose. His bionic eye was dark. "How do you guys do that? That thing where you both talk--"
"What is all this stuff, Boz?" Nick asked. "It's so....shiny." He was examining a bright pink glass ball.
"What's wrong with shiny, Nick?" Cody asked.
"Oh you tell me, genius," Nick responded. "After all, it seemed to work so well for you as an outfit."
"Nick, that was--"
"Guys! Please! Please!" Murray held up his hands. "Come on! No fighting on Wikkmas Eve."
The two of them proffered apologies and managed to look contrite. "Murray," Nick continued, "you still haven't told us what Wikkmas is, exactly?"
"Well, back where I come from, it's a huge holiday to celebrate the continuing generosity of the Trintekkan spirit. There's a whole legend about how the Great Wikken comes down the chimney of every home and leaves presents for everyone, asking nothing more than a single egg in return."
The bridge was silent for a moment, as Murray was lost in happy memories from his youth, and his co-pirates regarded him solemnly.
"Your holiday celebrates home invasion?" Nick asked.
"No Nick! That's not it at all!" Murray cried, and Cody gave his partner The Look, the one which indicated the footie pajamas might be staying on for quite a long time, if he kept that up.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Boz. I didn't mean it like that, okay? This holiday is obviously very important to you, so we will absolutely help you celebrate, okay? Just tell us what you want us to do."
The Look disappeared.
"With all the shiny things."
It returned, and Nick smirked at it.
Murray clapped his hands in delight. "Oh you guys! I knew you'd like it! This is gonna be so boss! Just--Nick, if you could just take the tikksel--"
"You mean the furry string?"
"Yup, that's it, and just kind of drape it around--I thought we'd use the captain's chair for a nest this year, if that's all right with you, Cody."
Cody blinked, and Nick elbowed him. "It's fine with him, Murray. So string, on the chair, gotcha. I'm on it." He gingerly detached the tikksel from the rest of Murray's collection. "What's the rest of this stuff, man?"
Murray picked up two glass balls and very carefully carried them to Cody's chair. "These represent the wikken's eggs! See, we just lay them carefully in there, and Nick, if you'll just tuck the end of the tikksel around them there..." Nick and Murray between them adjusted the items on the chair until Murray stood back and regarded the whole with satisfaction. "Aw that's great! That's just--"
"Boss?" Nick asked with a smile. He squeezed Murray's shoulder gently.
Murray grinned from ear to ear. "Possibly also bodacious."
Nick looked impressed. "That's a good thing, right? There ya go. Happy Wikkmas."
"Oh no no, wait," Murray said, "there's one more thing. We need the wikken."
Cody stood behind them, arms crossed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "What the hell's a wikken, Murray?"
"Hey. Captain." Nick said. "Snap out of it. It's Wikkmas, all right? Get into the spirit." He went over and clapped Cody on the back, letting his hand rest between his partner's shoulders. "A wikken is...Murray, what the hell's a wikken?"
The Riptide's navigator hopped from foot to foot with excitement. "That's the best part! See, wikkens are these birds that were imported to Trintekka a long long time ago--only they can't fly, so--"
"Then how do they get up to the chimneys, Murray?" Cody asked tiredly. Nick glared, and slid his hand down to Cody's ass. Cody gave a little jump as he was pinched.
"Oh well legend has it that they can only fly on Wikkmas Eve, but that's not the best part. See, on Trintekka, every home has a symbolic nest, with tikksel and the eggs, and on top of it all you place a stuffed wikken statue. You know, so that the Great Wikken knows you're a believer."
"Well, that definitely sounds like the best part to me, Murray. My chair definitely needs a stuffed wikken."
Nick ramped up his glare and the accompanying pinch, up a notch. Cody stepped away, rubbing his hindquarters ruefully.
"No no! Wait til you see her!" Murray disappeared down the steps from the bridge with a giggle.
Nick and Cody exchanged a look. "Her?" they asked in unison.
A few seconds later there was a squawk, and then a bundle of feathers came bouncing up the stairs towards them. Nick stepped in front of Cody and drew his blaster.
"No no, Nick! Don't shoot Gloria!"
"Murray!" Nick shouted. "You have livestock on the ship?" He stared. "How long have you had her? Where did you get her? Is she dangerous?" As he yelled, Nick kept his pistol on the scraggly yellow bird as she hopped around the bridge, flapping her tiny ornamental wings with each bounce.
Cody covered his eyes. "Nick, there's a wikken on my bridge."
"Oh no! Guys, no, she's perfectly safe! I grew her from an egg myself! I just wanted her to be a surprise!" Murray stepped between Nick and Gloria, and the weaponsmaster lowered his pistol. "Oh, and: yes, I do; the incubation period's five months; I traded with a Contessan for some nav drive parts; and no." He ticked the answers off on long slender fingers.
Nick holstered his weapon. "How? That means she's been on this ship for a whole month and neither of us ever saw her."
"Well technically Nick, she wasn't on board the Riptide."
"She wasn't? Then where was she, man?"
"I hid her on the Mimi."
Nick's jaw dropped, and Cody smiled widely. Dropping a hand on Nick's shoulder, he said, "Sounds like the perfect place for her, Murray. Warm, secure...unused."
"Nick, are you mad? Cody, he looks mad."
Cody's smile grew. "He's not mad, Murray. He's just been struck by the spirit of Wikkmas. Isn't that right, big guy?" He clapped Nick on the back a few times. Hard.
"Let me go get her feed." Murray fled in the direction of his stateroom.
Nick and Cody remained on the bridge, staring at Gloria. The wikken stared back. Cody shook his head. "Well, whatever keeps the little guy happy, I guess."
"That's the spirit, Captain. See? You're a natural at Wikkmas."
"Gee thanks, Nick."
"Besides, I have a surprise for you. I got you something."
"You did?" Cody's face lit up. "Aw that's great, Nick. Where is it?"
Nick grinned. "Under your chair. I didn't know when was the best time to give it to you."
Cody's eyes flashed hungrily. "Well, buddy, you can give it to me anytime, day or ni--"
"The present, Cody. I meant the present."
Cody happily fished a small grey cube out from under his chair, one hand on the armrest for balance. Gloria hopped over and pecked Cody's finger and he yelped. "Nick! She--"
"I saw that. Come open your present over here, babe." He indicated the newly cleared captain's console, and Cody followed, with a worried look back over his shoulder. The cube fit easily on the console, and Cody gingerly tapped a button as Nick watched his face carefully.
The cube grew before their eyes, expanding until it was five times the size it had been. Then the top and bottom halves slid apart of their own accord. Lying in the bottom half was a set of combat leathers, nearly identical to the ones Nick wore, but in pure, sparkling white.
Cody looked up, startled and pleased. "Nick, how did you...when did you...
Nick leaned across the box and slid a hand along Cody's jaw before kissing him, long and sweet. "Go try 'em on, Captain."
Cody didn't need to be told twice, and he dashed off the bridge, cube in hand. Nick's grin followed him for a long time.
"Hey Nick? Nick?" Murray came bounding back up the steps. "Nick do you know anything about a laser-driven torque drive? There's one on my bunk, and I have no idea where it came from! I know I didn't order it, because I've been trying to find a rebuilt one, cheap, and this one looks brand new." He stopped for a minute, lost in thought. "Also, I'd probably remember ordering it, now I stop to think about--"
He broke off, catching sight of Nick's shy grin. "Giltaaet shaavu," Nick said softly. "It's a Caldarian expression that means....forget it, Murray, it doesn't matter what it means. Happy Wikkmas."
Murray took a few steps forward. "Giltweet shaves you too, Nick."
Nick pondered for a moment, head on one side, and Murray threw his arms around him, hugging him tight. Nick hugged him back. "Close enough, Boz. Close enough."
Cody jogged up the steps to the bridge, resplendent in his new white leathers. He stopped at the top, hands on his hips. Murray turned and his jaw dropped.
Gloria hooted mournfully and jumped from the nest, concealing herself under the Captain's chair with a frightened ruffle. The hooting continued.
Murray rushed over to her. "Oh no Gloria, that's just Cody. Really, you met him earlier..."
Nick walked up to his partner with a wicked grin, looking him over from head to toe.
"Well," Cody asked. "Think they'll protect me?"
"Not from what I have in mind." Nick put his arms around Cody and pulled him close, one hand dropping to caress Cody's leather-clad ass. "Not a chance."
Cody chuckled and nipped at Nick's jaw. There was a squeak of leather on leather as they kissed.
Murray had meanwhile managed to get his errant wikken comforted and back into her nest. "See," he crooned, "nothing to worry about. Although..." he frowned. "Hey, guys, guys? Cody's new suit, why does the zip go all the way--"
But when he turned around, the bridge was empty.
Murray threw his hands up in frustration, but then, after a moment's consideration, he nodded. "It's Wikkmas. Let them be happy."
The wikken squawked, ruffling its feathers and pecking at the tikksel.
"Oh no, don't eat that, Gloria, that's just for decoration."
At the sound of her name, the wikken made a valiant but doomed attempt at flight and tumbled out of the makeshift nest. Unhurt, she bounded over to Murray. He picked her up and set her on his lap. "Looks like it's just you and me for Wikkmas."
Over next to the captain's console, Roboz's eyes lit up and his antenna spun lazily.
DON'T FORGET ME.
"Oh Roboz, how could I forget you? It's true, you, me and Gloria, that's enough for a good Wikkmas!" Murray jabbed his fist through the air, and Gloria hooted again, big green eyes on the navigator.
Murray looked around the empty bridge disconsolately.
"Hey Roboz, do you still have that program of old Trintekkan music? Or did we take it out to make room for--"
NAME YOUR TUNE, MURRAY.
"Oh excellent! Let's see, how 'bout 'I'll Be Home For Wikkmas'. Do you have that one, Roboz?"
The floating robot's eyes glowed more brightly, and then the bridge filled with the sounds of sweet, slow strings, and a deep baritone voice.
I'll be home for Wikkmas
I wouldn't miss this fest
Murray swayed in his chair, and Gloria swayed right along with him.
Please have snow and mistletoe
All around the big nest
Murray sung along softly with the recording, and after a minute or so, even Gloria let out a long, melodious string of peeps. Neither of them noticed Nick and Cody, creeping back up the stairs, slightly disheveled. The knees of Cody's new white suit were grey.
Wikkmas Eve will find me
Where the lovelight gleams
I'll be home for Wikkmas
If only in my...
Murray choked on the last word, and Gloria looked at him worriedly, then let out a terrified hoot. Cody dropped his hand on Murray's shoulder. His other arm was around Nick's waist. "That's real pretty, Murray."
"Yeah," Nick said, "it sounds like a great song. Kinda sad though, don't you think?"
Murray looked up from where he was soothing the startled wikken. He took in the sight of the decorated captain's chair, Roboz and Gloria, and his two best friends, here to celebrate the holiday with him. "You know, Nick, actually, I don't feel sad at all."
HAPPY WIKKMAS, GUYS.
