Title: Conversations in the Dark: Plans
Rating: PG
Summary: The first time Nick and Cody talked after lights out.
Conversations in the Dark: Plans
"I asked Janet to stay. I would've done anything to make her happy, but in the end she picked a fancy job instead."
"I hear ya, man. Girls can screw you over like nothing else, you know? There was this one chick - well, I had plans, Cody. Even bought a goddamn ring."
"I wanted to marry Janet. When she left - it was like I didn't know which way was up anymore. That's why I joined up, Nick. I had to get away - I had to do something. I couldn't stay there and learn to be as - as soft and useless as my dad."
"Yeah? I got the whistle in the draft ballot, man. Don't get me wrong - I was damned glad about it. Would've joined up when I left school, but my mom made me promise not to. I knew the army was the only chance I had to fly. I been saving half my life, but I couldn't make enough for flight school."
"Mom and Dad paid for college. I got to be anything I wanted to be, as long as what I wanted was to be a lawyer just like my dad. I haven't seen my parents since I quit school. I knew what they'd say and I couldn't listen to it. I sent them a letter just before Uncle Sam shipped me out."
"A lawyer, huh? Not much call for that over here, is there?"
"Nick, one thing I learned in school is that I couldn't ever be a lawyer. I can't see the use of standing around talking when there's people dying, people out there that need help. At least this way, I'll maybe be some use to someone. D'you know what I'm getting at?"
"I know all right, Cody. And it goes double for me."
