Title: Blankets
Rating: PG
Summary: Morning, or possibly evening, aboard the Hightide. Time gets a little meaningless after a couple decades.

Nick woke up cold, but he was used to it. He hadn’t woken up under a blanket since 1972, since Cody started stealing them all every night.

Well maybe not every night, especially since there were those patches when the two of them weren’t...

Nick pushed the memories away and rolled closer to Cody instead, pulling him tighter against his stomach, and kissing his temple. Safe, Nick’s hand automatically wrote on Cody’s chest. Safe. Cody hadn’t asked, but that didn’t mean Nick wouldn’t take every opportunity to tell him.

Nick snuck a peek at his partner, still sleeping. His hair had gone from gold to silver, and his face was lined with hard living and experience, but to Nick that only made the sight more of a wonder. They’d survived. They kept surviving whatever life threw at them, that was the only thing that mattered.

Cody grumbled sleepily and sighing, turned over, burrowing his face against Nick’s neck. He snuck a hand out from under the red-and-gold comforter and rested it on Nick’s bad shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.

Nick relaxed into the mattress, rolling back a little to take Cody’s weight on him. He nuzzled the top of Cody’s head greedily, breathing him in, and Cody’s fingers twitched on his shoulder in response.

Nick let his eyes close and listened to the small sounds of the morning: the thrum of the fridge out in the galley and the infrequent firing of the gas heater followed by the rush of air through the vent at the foot of the bed. The squeak of boats rubbing against pontoons with the tide, the quiet lapping of waves. And under it all, Nick heard the sound he’d been listening for all along: the soft, rhythmic sleep-breaths of the guy who meant more to him than anyone in the world. Tuning everything else out, Nick pulled Cody a little closer and fell back asleep still listening, perfectly warm.

Absolutely delicious and so sweet it's unbelievable. Those two really are each other's blankets, seriously. WONDERFUL.

Thanks very much! They really, really are. There's nothing the two of them like more than curling up together, wrapped around each other. For all time.

Thanks again!
